Challenge
GSK wanted to increase its vaccination rates for Shingrix, the shingles vaccine for patients over 50. While providers routinely recommended Shingrix to their patients, we found a steep dropoff between point of recommendation and follow through vaccinations.
Approach
Using QR codes combined with app clip / instant app technology would allow us to deliver a native app experience without the friction of an app download. I led end-to-end product design for the full cross-platform product (iOS, Android, Web) including App Store assets and promotional material with QR codes for use in the provider's office. I prototyped the full flow and validated with 50+ year old participants to ensure they could effectively use QR codes. The primary considerations were for speed and accessibility, with full WCAG 2.1 AA compliance. In parallel, I collaborated with engineering and retail partners to define APIs that allowed us to get access to location, scheduling, and inventory management so we could surface only the pharmacies that have the vaccine available.
Outcomes
The experience launched, met the sub‑60‑second scheduling target, and proved the model under real conditions. Regions where it deployed saw a 24% lift in vaccinations, and the work created a blueprint for international expansion.
